The surge consists of the enormous doors, that are computer based, which is called Beslis en Ondersteunend Systeem. This system decides, with a base on continuous calculations of the expected water level. It calculates whether it is necessary to close the doors by high water.

Geo-excursion Safety Region Rotterdam Rijnmond (Veiligheidsregio Rotterdam Rijnmond)

As the first region in The Netherlands, Rotterdam-Rijnmond is in possession of a fully operational and organizationally complete Safety-region. Its aim is to provide the citizens more safety through means of better cooperation between emergency services. The common call room (GMK), in the World Port Center, near the Erasmusbridge, is technically sublime. The equipment is the latest from the latest. The GMK is the heart of the safety region Rotterdam-Rijnmond. All connections and messages are gathered in the common call room. This place, where people and competences are mixed, is the central place where an immediate response appears when 112 is being called. The call room makes sure there is immediate help from the closest ambulance, fire brigade or police. The centralist, who can see all the safety screens, can see where all units are. With one blink of an eye the closest can take off.

Our competent guide will take you from the WTC, after which public transportation will be used to get to the GMK.

Geo-excursion Harbor Traffic Control Center, including transport by bus

One of the main goals of this organization is to increase an effective, safe and efficient completion of shipping traffic and to take care of the nautical en maritime order and safety as well as applying their harbour authority in the harbour area of Rotterdam. Het Gemeentelijk Havenbedrijf Rotterdam (GHR) wants to know precisely what is happening on the water. This is necessary for a quick completion of the traffic on the water, but also in case an emergency happens. This all is done by the Haven Coordinatie Centrum (HCC). Messages with regard to incoming and outgoing ships are delivered here. This involves electronic messages. Because of this possibility, information can be handled more quickly with less costs and more quality. To take care of the water traffic the Vessel Traffic System (VTS) is used. On the water, the HCC is supported by ships from the GHR and with the help of a radar system and the Informatie Verwerkend Systeem (IVS, Information Processing System). All data is collected in the IVS.

The Gemeentelijk Havenbedrijf will give a presentation about the harbour and provide a tour to the HCC.

Geo-excursions: ECT (European Container Terminal)

A visit to the Delta Terminal of the ECT is a visit to a fully automated Container Terminal in the harbour of Rotterdam. So called automatic guided vehicles (AGVs) are responsible for the loading and unloading of ships. Everything is made for an integrated software system, Process Control System, which knows exactly where each container has to be stored through navigation, tracking and tracing.

At the ECT area it is because of safety reasons you are not allowed to walk. The guide will explain everything from the bus.

Geo-excursions: Car Terminal

At the Rotterdam Car Terminal cars are brought in by ship, they are stocked so that they afterwards can by shipped by car, train or ship to the several showrooms. The terminal can host up to 30,000 cars that can be found again by a tracking and tracing system. We will bring you here by bus, straight from the WTC. Here you will get a tour by foot from a competent guide.
